Open mic nights in Wellington

Hey, are you new to performance and ready to face a real audience? Or, are you an old hand who just needs to blow away the cobwebs? Regardless, of which category you fall into, you may benefit from performing at a venue that provides a comfortable and supportive environment. With this in mind, here are some open mic nights in Wellington.

The Fringe Bar

Where: 26 Allen Street, Wellington

When: Tuesdays, 7.30pm – 10.00pm

Restrictions: All ages

Booking: Sign up on the night or pre-book if you need a sound check.


This is Wellington’s longest running open mic night, and by taking part, you are in with a chance of performing at the Fringe Bar Show.

You can play three songs (covers or originals) or for 15 minutes. Equipment provided by the venue includes PA, drum kit, bongos, acoustic guitar and bass guitar with amp.

Open mic etiquette: It’s great having people listen to your music, so make sure you hang around and support other musos when you’re off the stage.

The Welsh Dragon Bar & Scorpio’s Restaurant

Where: Kent Terrace, Mt Victoria, Wellington

When: Wednesdays, 8.00pm – 11.00pm

Restrictions: R18

The Hop Garden

Where: 13 Pirie St, Mt Victoria, Wellington

When: Every second Monday, 7.00pm – 10.00pm

Restrictions: R18

Booking: Check with the venue.


Original or cover songs welcome, including comedy, poetry or magic. Each performer goes into a draw to win a $40 bar tab. If the weather is fine, you’ll be playing on the roof.
